Effective Stress Management – What You Need to Know

From having a hectic work routine to dealing with financial hassles, we all feel stressful at one point or another in our lives.

While some level of stress is healthy, problems begin when stress is prolonged and causes disturbances in daily functioning.

No matter how stressful you feel, the good news is that you can take steps to relieve it and gain control over your life. Here are some ways you can do that:

Identify Stressors

The first step to take when managing stress is to identify ‘stressors’. While it is easy to single out major factors, such as divorce or change of job, it is difficult to understand everyday factors that might be leading to stress.

Make sure you take note of your thoughts, feelings and behaviors. A good way to do this would be to keep a stress journal.

Make Some Healthy Lifestyle Changes

Your lifestyle defines a lot about how you are managing stress. Although unhealthy lifestyle may not be causing stress, it can prevent you from getting rid of it.

Here are some changes that you can make to improve your lifestyle habits:

  • You need to find a balance between your personal and professional lives. Look to enhance meaningful interactions with friends and family members.
  • Have some purpose or meaning in life. This will keep you focused and on track.
  • Make sure that you are getting enough sleep. Appropriate 7 to 8 hours’ sleep will keep you fresh and relaxed.

Engage in Physical Activities

It is quite easy to avoid physical activities when under stress. However, exercising for a few minutes or running can help you fight stressors in healthy ways. These physical activities help your body release endorphins – a feel-good hormone. What’s more, they can prove to be distractions from daily hassles of life.

Have Some Fun

It is very important that you take time out for fun activities. Whether it is taking a vacation break or watching a humorous movie, make sure you take some time out for yourself every now and then.

Manage Time More Effectively

Poor time management is one of the major factors causing stress. You need to prioritize and learn to differentiate urgent from the non-urgent.

Also, if you are a control-freak, you might need to delegate responsibility and let things go. Finally break projects down into small, manageable steps.
